Chapter 12

Steam rolled out of the bathroom as I stood there staring at my phone. Silas had Dave. A human who had nothing to do with what was happening. A human that I wasn’t supposed to care about. A human who shouldn’t have been on Silas’s radar, and I knew just who to blame.

Simon.

The slimy rat of a hunter had to have done this. He was working with Viktor. I knew that from the information Dave had given me before. I was also aware it was completely possible for Silas and Viktor to be working together, one hoping to screw over the other once they got their hands on me, just like Dmitri had intended.

It was all starting to make sense, and I now had a hunter I desperately wanted to murder alongside the vampires.

I read the messages again, then began listening to the voicemails. Each one was more frantic than the last.

My phone had been long forgotten until last night. Silas’s message was from just a few hours after we got back from Nyx, which hopefully meant he hadn’t had Dave for long.

I was nearly done listening to the messages in my voicemail when Maciah walked into my room. “What’s wrong?” he asked immediately.

“Throw out every plan we thought we had. We’re going after Silas. Now.” My voice was clipped as Dave’s distressed message echoed through my ear.

“Why? What happened?”

“Silas has Dave. I don’t care if we’re being set up. I have to get him back. I won’t let him die because of me,” I said as the last message ended, then tossed Maciah my phone. “Read the texts. Listen to the voicemails. We can’t let Silas kill him.”

Maciah began scrolling through my phone, and I could sense his frustrations rising just like mine had as he continued.

“We’re going to figure this out. Your bartender will be fine,” Maciah said as he pulled me into his arms.

I pushed him away with the smallest amount of effort, not trying to be rude, but comfort wasn’t what I needed when I was furious like this.

“We have to call Dave’s phone and see if Silas answers,” I said as Rachel and Nikki walked in.

“Who’s Dave?” Nikki asked.

“The hot bartender from Crossroads,” Rachel answered. “Why would Silas answer his phone?”

I took my phone from Maciah, and handed it to Nikki’s waiting hand, letting them see what I had.

“What are we doing about this?” Nikki asked.

Maciah ran a hand through his hair while the other took the phone back from Nikki. “I’m not sure, but we can’t do anything without thinking it through first. Hasty decisions will only get Dave killed.”

I snarled and flexed my fists at my side, even though he was probably right.

Maciah reached for me, lifting my chin until he had my full attention. “I promise to take this seriously, but you’re too closely involved. Let me figure something out. Go workout with Rachel and Nikki, since that’s what you were about to do anyway. I will come get you as soon as I have more information.
